Where were you when Mount St. Helens erupted on May 18, 1980? I remember being at home watching the eruption on the news.
Shaken by an earthquake measuring 5.1 on the Richter scale, the north face of the mountain collapsed in a large avalanche of debris.
Prior to the 1980 eruption, Mount St. Helens was the fifth-highest peak in Washington, and was often referred to as being the Mount Fuji of America.
Did you know the volcano continued to erupt until 1986? Thick pasty lava eruptions oozed out, each one piling on top of the next, creating a lava dome that still stands 920 feet high.
To this day, scientists continue to monitor the volcano’s seismic activity for earthquakes, swelling, and gas emissions.
♿️ During our trip we had a little time to explore Accessibility in the area. There is Accessible parking, Accessible areas with benches outside of the Visitor Center, and paved walkways with slight slopes leading to upper and lower viewpoints. I loved how the trees perfectly framed the views of Mount St Helens, so I couldn't resist photographing some moments while we were there. I stood in awe of Mount St Helens feeling her power as I photographed some moments.

I trust that my research, area exploration, and personal experience sharing have been beneficial! I initiated this project in 2017, more than seven years ago. Through my journey, I have come to realize the importance of revisiting locations multiple times to provide updated information. This not only benefits me but also aids individuals with disabilities, the elderly, or those with limited mobility. Moreover, it helps raise awareness among trail users and park staff.
