I’ve been personally dealing with the challenges disabled people constantly have to face when venturing outdoors for many years now. It takes a lot of research to find out where the ADA accessible places are. I hope that someday our society (parks, banks, stores, airplanes, housing...) will not only comply by the ADA Law, but respect, acknowledge & include disabled people when making decisions that pertain to accessibility.
Every disability is unique and I can only speak for myself, but I am available to consult with anyone who wants to ask a disabled person like me what I've experienced and what is needed to make things more accessible. I am human being & I would like to have equal access like everyone else to anywhere I’d like to go, especially outdoors! Change begins with awareness, communication, community and inclusion.
I love the outdoors & I love connecting with nature! Every time I stop, look & listen, especially when in nature, I learn something! The other day as I was feeling the warmth of the sun on my face, watching the squirrels playing in the grass, hearing the birds sing & watching a school of Bat Rays swim by, I felt calm, at peace & happy!
Nature is healing & everyone should have access to experience moments of tranquility, peace & happiness like this outdoors!
I trust that my research, area exploration, and personal experience sharing have been beneficial! I initiated this project in 2017. Through my journey, I have come to realize the importance of revisiting locations multiple times to provide updated information. This not only benefits me but also aids individuals with disabilities, the elderly, or those with limited mobility. Moreover, it helps raise awareness among trail users and park staff.
